Site History#
Since 2018, I have been trying to establish my own internet residence, a personal website. In the early stages, I took many detours due to insufficient technical skills and a lack of website building tutorials at that time. For a period of time before, I intermittently ran some websites that could only be accessed through an intranet penetration service provider, and most of them did not accumulate any real content. The first website with its own domain name was finally announced to the Internet on March 30, 2019, through an intranet penetration, with almost no visitors, but I really started to write something for this website - this is also a kind of interest, one of the few entertainments for me. This also became the "solitary island" that I often mentioned in my articles. During that time, it really made people feel very sad, as if a bonfire had risen on an internet island, and the fireworks floated into the sky, but no one could see them. And the website's access speed was also very slow (~1s).
By 2020, I finally realized and started using cloud services to run my website. First, I searched for various virtual hosting providers using search engines. And the big companies were not considered first because the prices were too expensive and there were also issues with record filing. But in the end, it made me take more detours: I first used a free virtual hosting from a small company, but the virtual hosting did not support binding my own domain name. Later, I turned to using a low-cost virtual hosting from another small company, which cost only 3 yuan or 5 yuan per month (I can't remember exactly). However, the drawback of virtual hosting is clear, because it does not have a dedicated IP, it is difficult to be included in search engines. What made me take a detour was that this small company encountered a series of industry controversies. In fact, the one running the "small company" was just a peer of the same age as me who came out to earn pocket money, nothing more.
Looking back on that time, there was some unwillingness. It was already a vacation, and it was the vacation before the transition to middle school, especially relaxing. In such a relaxed vacation, I naturally wanted to do something and revive my interest in website building. The unwillingness came from being influenced by immaturity, and naturally thinking that as long as there is a page accessible on the Internet, it is a glorious webmaster, and there is vanity to show off. But at least during that time, I finally started to write something and posted it on my website. I vaguely remember that I used Baidu website statistics at that time, and looking at the various statistics items in the backend of the statistics, I seemed to feel that I was doing something great. The result was that there were no visitors, and even the number of views was not many (they were all from my own visits).
But 2020 was indeed a turning point for everything. Because in that year, a earth-shattering event happened to my website: the homepage of my website was included by search engines. Now it may seem that for a blog, every article should be included and ranked at the forefront to be considered a qualified website. But for me at that time, this was equivalent to the recognition of my efforts by the Internet portal! I was happy for a long time. Later, after learning more things and reflecting on the past, I found it strange. At that time, I was using virtual hosting, and there was no SEO at all. I was even using a free .tk domain name, so it was impossible to have a chance to be included, right? But now it seems that all of this may just be a coincidence. It is possible that the ranking of my website in the search results was actually very low at that time, but I directly searched for the website address through the search engine, so it appeared at the forefront.
It is undeniable that 2020 inspired me. The subsequent epidemic allowed me to spend more time studying technology. I also gradually realized that using virtual hosting was no longer a solution. I searched for information about VPS on the Internet, just like when I first started building websites. At that time, my financial situation was better, so I chose a cloud server from a big company, and embarked on a formal website building journey.
What is regrettable is that during the period from 2020 to 2022, almost none of the articles I wrote for the website remained due to various system reinstallation, computer replacement, and service provider running away. There were also some remaining articles, but when I reread them later, I felt that they were not written well enough and were not suitable for indiscriminate appreciation by everyone on the website.
In 2022, I officially started purchasing an annual fee cloud server for 200 yuan/year. At that time, the server line was CN2-BGP, and the website was guaranteed stability. Actually, along with the improvement of the website's performance, my academic performance in real life also improved significantly. I finally had several times more time than my peers to observe and record life, as well as study some hobbies in my spare time. In the middle of 2022, I started using the Argon theme for the website, and the website became more and more beautiful.
Also in 2022, I finally grew up and learned to back up my articles. I also have my own NAS and started backing up some documents. I became more cautious, and I thought more before sending out my writing. In the late 2022, I purchased a Typecho theme, and the website migrated to the faster Typecho blogging system.
The .top domain (xhwork.top) and .tk domain (xiahe.tk) that I had been using were all terminated. The current helim.net domain name, with a retro flavor (thanks to the .net suffix), has been renewed until November 2024. I think cultivating the determination to do one thing is also an important part of learning. In order to maintain this determination, I also joined the Ten-Year Covenant project as a reminder to myself.
In 2023, I started to purchase the CN2-GIA server from BandwagonHost on a quarterly basis. At this time, it may be a bit exaggerated, but the speed of my website should be considered first-class among similar independent blogs. Through Azure and CDNs provided by other big companies, the management of the website's static assets has also become more reasonable.
Decentralized blogging is a brand new idea inspired by xLog. It will complement manual backups and become a long-term recording space for me on the Internet.
